The project required balancing numerous thematic elements while maintaining a cohesive silhouette and clear visual hierarchy suitable for Live2D production.

Challenge

Although the final design appears visually elegant and minimal, the project involved a significant amount of material exploration and design refinement.

Key challenges included:

  • Rendering a translucent galaxy-inspired waist shawl layered over dark clothing

  • Balancing multiple material types, including silk, metal, fabric, pearls, and transparent textiles

  • Integrating numerous bronze accessories without overwhelming the overall palette

  • Designing a cohesive relationship between the sleeves, bodice, belt, and layered garments

  • Preserving readability despite the high level of detail throughout the outfit

The client provided extensive concept iterations and reference material, requiring careful interpretation and consolidation into a production-ready design.

Process

The design was developed through close collaboration with the client, who provided multiple concept revisions and a comprehensive visual moodboard.

Throughout production, iterative feedback sessions were used to refine both structural and aesthetic elements of the design.

Several adjustments were made to improve visual cohesion, including:

  • Revising the garment layering around the waist and torso

  • Tucking the upper garment into the belt to improve silhouette clarity

  • Refining accessory placement and scale

  • Exploring multiple rendering approaches for the celestial shawl

Because the model was intended for Live2D use, all artwork was prepared with rigging requirements in mind, ensuring clean layer separation and future animation flexibility.

Solution

The most technically demanding element was the translucent galaxy shawl.

Multiple rendering approaches were tested to achieve:

  • Transparency without losing readability

  • Visible galaxy coloration over dark clothing

  • Embedded constellation details

  • A glitter-like finish that complemented the celestial theme

The final solution combined layered color gradients, transparency effects, and carefully placed highlights to create a fabric that felt lightweight while preserving the visual impact of the celestial motif.

Additional attention was given to harmonizing bronze accessories, silk sleeves, and darker clothing materials so that each retained a distinct material identity without competing for attention.

Result

The completed model was able to be translated into a cohesive VTuber design while maintaining production readiness for Live2D rigging.

The project strengthened my experience in:

  • Material rendering

  • Layered costume design

  • Client collaboration

  • Visual hierarchy

  • Production-focused VTuber illustration
